Cruise Checklist Questions

How much luggage can I bring on a cruise?

Cruise lines are generally more relaxed than airlines, but many set limits and recommend a reasonable number of bags per person. If you fly, the airline’s limits will usually be the stricter rule.

What outlets are in a cruise cabin?

Most ships have U.S.-style outlets and many have European-style outlets too, but often only a few. A non-surge multi-USB charger helps; check your line’s rules on power strips.

Do I need cash on a cruise?

Onboard purchases go on your cruise account, so you need little cash aboard. Bring small bills for porters and for tips or purchases in port.

Can I bring my own alcohol?

It depends on the line. Many allow a limited amount of wine or champagne at embarkation, sometimes with a corkage fee if consumed in restaurants. Spirits are commonly prohibited. Check your line’s current policy.

What happens to prohibited items found at security?

They are typically confiscated or held and returned at the end of the cruise, depending on the item and the line.

Should I pack a passport even if my cruise doesn’t require one?

It is strongly recommended. If you must leave the ship in a foreign port, you will need a passport book to fly home.

Can I do laundry on board?

Most ships offer a paid laundry service, and some have self-service launderettes. That makes it possible to pack lighter on longer cruises.

When is the best time to start packing?

Start a list as soon as you book, buy anything you are missing a few weeks out, and pack about a week before. That leaves time to fix gaps without a last-minute rush.

Do I need a plug adapter on a cruise ship?

Usually not for U.S. devices on ships that have U.S.-style outlets, but it is worth checking your ship. You may need one for a hotel before or after a European cruise.

What if my checked bag doesn’t arrive at my cabin?

Bags can take until evening on embarkation day. If yours has not arrived by late evening, contact guest services. This is why medication, documents and a change of clothes belong in your carry-on.

Can I bring snacks or bottled water on board?

Rules vary by line. Many allow sealed, non-alcoholic drinks in limited amounts and packaged snacks; some restrict them. Check your line’s current policy before you pack them.

What should I pack for a cruise with kids?

Add swim diapers if the line allows young children in pools (rules vary), favorite snacks for the first afternoon, a night light, and copies of birth certificates and any consent letters for minors.
